Whitney Mercilus had a breakout year with Illinois. He started all 13 games this past season, after only starting 2 in his previous 24 games. He made 57 tackles this year, 22.5 were for a loss and 16 sacks. He also forced 9 fumbles his year. In 37 total games, he recorded 81 tackles, 29 TFL, 18 sacks, and 11 FFs.

Mercilus has good speed and size. Has a good closing burst and speed from the outside. Has played both the left and right side, as well as some 5- and 3- technique. Plays hard and is a good tackler.

He is still a little raw and lacks experience, only started in 15 games in 37. May not fit in a 3-4 defense as well as a 4-3. Has some issues shedding blocks. Better against the pass rush compared to the against the run.
