Nick Toon's Player Profile

Nick Toon has NFL size, speed, hands, route running, and bloodlines. He comes from a winning program that plays in a good system to translate to the next level. He has been their top receiver for going on 3 seasons now, and since he has been getting outstanding QB play he is showing more big play ability. He is running routes that are common in NFL systems and should be prepared to go to the next level. Ideally he will be a possession receiver and is adept at working the intermediate routes to bring in the secondary before he can beat you over the top. He will leave Wisconsin as one of the more productive receivers in their history. I like his smarts as a receiver, when the QB extends the play he can find space to get open and make a catch. He is also a willing blocker and has experience in cold weather and big games. He will leave college mature as a 5th year senior, he does not show character concerns. I think that he can also contribute as a punt returner.

Toon doesn’t have glaring weaknesses but neither does he have a great area of strength. His physical traits as a receiver are good but not great. His productivity falls a bit versus top level competition. He has also missed games because of injury. He is not a receiver that gets open at will on the outside, nor does he make big plays after the catch or have the ball skills in the NFL to throw to when covered and consistently come down with the ball.

I think if you draft Nick Toon in the 3rd round or later you are going to be solid. He has not shown the ability to be a #1 option but he has the skill set, bloodlines and productivity to belong in the NFL. His value in the NFL long term will depend on his willingness to catch the ball in traffic as well as ability to stay healthy. I think a decent NFL comparison is Michael Jenkins.
