Matt Kalil
Ht/Wt: 6-7/295 lbs
Position: OT
School: USC
Class: RS Junior

Matt Kalil's Player Profile

The NFL has had a pretty good streak of top 10 OL picks working out. Matt Kalil is a good enough prospect to keep last year’s first round pick Tyron Smith at RT so that Kalil would man the blind side for Barkley. This is just how you draw up a LT in today’s NFL, at 6ft7 he carries 300lbs without excess body fat and an enormous wingspan. He has good footwork and by playing in USC’s system has prepared him well to pass protect at the next level. Not only does he come from a NFL breeding ground school, but his brother is a successful NFL lineman which bodes well. Kalil is not just a good lineman but a great player who can make a play outside of his assignment when plays break down, also adept at making down field blocking on screens. Being that he is more lean of an athlete bodes well for his conditioning and so far he is clean from off field issues or injuries.

The negatives for Kalil is that he is not seeing as good of competition if he were in the Sec where he would see more schemes that would prepare him better for the NFL. For being a player considered a lock to be in the top 5, athletically he is not going to test out as well as elite LTs Jake Long or Joe Thomas, also being a so cal guy you are going to question if he has the mean streak to be a force like D’Brickashaw Ferguson and how he will fare in the elements. Although he is ideal for pass protection he is not so much in the running game.

I can see Matt Kalil being a cross between USC alum Sam Baker and Jake Long. He has the length and footwork to protect the blind side without having to rely on double teams much. Edge rushers will have to take a wider angle to compensate for Kalil’s length which will also leave the defense vulnerable to wider running lanes. You can justify drafting Matt Kalil anywhere after Andrew Luck.
