Justin Blackmon's Player Profile

As a sophomore Justin Blackmon had one of the most productive years ever for a receiver, and isn’t missing a beat as a jr. His success is a testament to his work ethic, a very complete player who came to OSU as a fairly unsung recruit. Although he doesn’t have ideal height he has great strength and explosion at 6ft 1 210lbs, he is very durable and plays a lot taller with his incredible leaping ability. Blackmon’s greatest strength is one of the most important qualities for a receiver which is his hands. He is a very consistent pass catcher and racks up the catches. What I like about Justin is he is a possession guy and a deep threat. Even though he doesn’t have elite speed by NFL standards he tracks the ball extremely well on deep throws, he has the ball skills to go up in the air and come down with it, and can make the acrobatic catch on the inaccurate throws. Also, he is built like a rb and has that mentality that when he catches the ball he is looking to pick up more yards and doesn’t shy away from contact. You just don’t find many guys that you can throw bubble screens too as well as slants, post patterns and go routes. Offensive coordinators are going to love coaching him, and gms are going to love the fact that he works so hard and doesn’t seem to have any baggage. He can also be a good punt return guy as well.

As far as weaknesses you usually don’t see top of the 1st round prospects that are only 6ft 1 and don’t have elite speed or route running technique. His style of play could lead to injuries and carelessness with ball control since he is always looking to pick up extra yards. Has not been asked to do a lot of blocking.

When you see this massive production at a major conference it certainly catches your attention. I like the fact that he plays in such a pass heavy system and his durability is so well proven. Depending on the team that he goes to he can easily be one of the leading pass catchers in the league. My NFL comparison would be a cross between Greg Jennings and Hakeem Nicks. He is a physical, playmaking, volume catcher.
