Carnell Tate's Player Profile
Tate entered college as a five?star recruit and has steadily developed into one of the Buckeyes’ most productive and versatile wide receivers. Over three seasons he played 39 games, started 26, and finished with 121 receptions for 1,872 yards and 14 touchdowns, while consistently catching the football at a high rate and showing excellent hands and blocking technique. He is a bouncy, athletic boundary receiver who runs the full route tree well, attacks the ball in the air, and can win on all three levels, especially working in and over the intermediate range. His combination of catch?radius, body control, and dependability makes him appealing to NFL teams that want a smart, physical outside receiver who can function as both a yardage producer and a down?field red?zone threat.Strengths: His biggest strengths are his advanced route?running and his ability to track and win contested catches, which give him a very high floor as a reliable possession and red?zone wideout.
Weaknesses: His biggest weaknesses are relatively limited after?the?catch explosiveness and a playing style that leans more on precision and timing than elite separation speed, which can make him more of a polished WR2 than a true home?run WR1 if he lands in a crowded offense.
Mel Kiper - ESPN - January 21st: "Tate produced big plays on a regular basis, averaging 17.2 yards per catch this season. He is a precise route runner, has great hands and displays outstanding body control. And he'll also happily block for ball carriers, which NFL coaches love to see."
Walt - Walter Football- January 20th: "Carnell Tate didn’t do much as a freshman, but the tall receiver had a breakout sophomore campaign."
Gordon McGinness - PFF - January 19th: "The next man up in an increasingly long line of impressive Ohio State wide receivers, Tate caught 85.7% of the contested targets he saw in 2025, didn’t drop a pass and averaged 3.03 yards per route run."
Josh Edwards - CBS Sports - January 19th: "Tate is a bigger body with great body control and a feel for playing in space."
NFL Draft Buzz- January: "Tate will thrive in an NFL offense that maximizes his route precision and intermediate excellence, profiling as a high-floor possession receiver who understands professional concepts. He's a natural Z-receiver who dominates in that 10-20 yard sweet spot where timing matters, with his smooth efficiency in all route-running aspects translating seamlessly to NFL systems."
