Akheem Mesidor's Player Profile
Akheem Mesidor is a long, athletic edge defender whose profile is built on length, bend, and the ability to attack the quarterback from wide alignments along the line. He uses a low?pad frame, long arms, and heavy hands to turn the corner, stay in the quarterback’s lap, and win with leverage and technique, while also showing enough versatility to slide inside on passing downs and create disruption in the A?gaps. His ability to generate pressure from multiple alignments, combined with his size and motor, gives him upside as a three?down edge/interior defender who can rotate based on matchup and scheme.Strengths: His biggest strengths are his length and bend around the edge, which allow him to threaten the pocket from wide angles while staying connected to the block, and his ability to use his hands and strength to keep his chest clean and extend through contact.
Weaknesses: His biggest weaknesses are his occasional inconsistency in how hard he plays from snap to snap, as he can win some reps with pure athleticism while drifting on others, and his limited ability to anchor against double?teams, which can make him vulnerable to being washed out of the pocket in heavy?run looks.
Mel Kiper - ESPN - January 21st: "The Canadian makes his presence felt against both the run and the pass, and he shows good bend, closing burst and power. When his initial move is thwarted, Mesidor never stops battling. He also brings some versatility, with the ability to shade inside to DT and get pressure on the interior."
Walt - Walter Football- January 20th: "Akheem Mesidor is a physical edge setter and a consistent pass rusher."
Josh Edwards - CBS Sports - January 19th: "Although Rueben Bain has garnered most of the notoriety for Miami's College Football Playoff run, Mesidor has been equally impactful."
NFL Draft Buzz- January: "His ability to rush the passer from multiple positions will be highly valued by NFL coordinators looking to create mismatches along the line of scrimmage. While his size may limit him in some aspects, his quickness and tenacity should allow him to carve out a significant role as a rotational player early in his career."
